Waiting Times At Record Low

NHS waiting time in Cambridgeshire are at their lowest ever level. Most people don't need to wait longer than 18 weeks to start treatment.

The 18 week target was brought in by the NHS in 2004. They have to make sure 90% of people who are admitted to hospital are treated within the 18 week period.

Bikers Urged To Take Care

As the weather gets warmer road safety chiefs in Cambridgeshire are warning motorcyclists to take extra care. Many drivers will be getting back on their bikes after spending the winter driving their cars.

The advice urges bikers to remember to "get their bike heads on." Whilst they also ask car drivers to take extra care to look for bikes.

They say there's a particular problem with men over the age of 35 being involved in collisions. There was a 39% increase in the number of accidents involving the over 35's between 1997 and 2007. That compares to a 40% decrease for riders aged between 25-34.

Invisible Liquid Tackles Burglaries

150 homes in the Orchard Park area of Cambridge have marked up their valuables with special SmartWater.

The liquid contains a unique code in each pot, a little bit like DNA. It means if the property ever gets stolen police can trace who it belongs to.

They've been given out to residents in the new development after a spate of burglaries. Police have also been giving out crime prevention advice. They advise residents to make sure windows and doors are locked. Sheds should also be locked, especially if tools in there could be used to break into the house.

More Recyclers Needed in East Cambridgeshire

East Cambridgeshire residents need to recycle more. That's according to council chiefs who say the new system introduced a year ago hasn't been as successful as they'd hoped.

Many people have complained about bags not being left so they can put their rubbish out, which has been making it difficult.

The councilor in charge of the scheme says they're going to do more to train the staff who collect it and recruit a new recycling co-ordinator.

Guided Busway Nears Completition

The final concrete beam for the guided busway has been made.

The sixteen mile route between St Ives and Cambridge is already several months behind schedule. The County Council have previously blamed the delays on bad weather.

Road Deaths Fall in Cambridgeshire

The number of people dying on the county's roads is at an all time low.

Figures released by the County Council show 47 people were killed in 2008 compared to 62 the year before. That's a fall of 24%.

Last year two high profile safety campaigns on the A1307 and on Fenland roads took place. A number of speed cameras were installed and safety work was also carried out.

It's thought the high cost of fuel for part of last year may have also had an effect, as fewer people use their cars.

Congestion Charging Supported

An independent report has recommended congestion charging in Cambridge should be approved. Centre for Cities say if local autorities don't make a decision in the next six months they could lose up to £500. million pounds forever.

The report also recommends land for housing should be bought cheaply during the recesion. They think this will make it easier for developers once the market picks up again.
