107 Star FM is broadcast from our studio complex at Radio House in the heart
of Cambridge. The main studio consists of a Soundcraft mixing desk. This is
used to mix together the different pieces of audio, for example, the microphone,
or the computer playout system.
All of the songs, adverts and jingles you hear on Star are stored on a large
computer system made by a company called ENCO Systems. Storing the audio on computer means that it's crystal clear every time - and saves the presenter rummaging through the record library to find CD's! Presenters use a bank of touch screens to operate the playout system.
The racks room is the hub of the station. This contains all the equipment
necessary to receive satellite feeds from Independent Radio News in London,
plus the lines to send our programme feed to our two transmitters. We
have two transmitters - one serving the Cambridge area on 107.9FM
(100 watts) and one serving the Ely area on 107.1FM (200 watts).
We transmit RDS and utilise the traffic flag switching facility.
Our transmitters are maintained by Bancom
Communications.
