Celebrating making it to ten years spent in each others pockets..... The dysfunctional collective that is Sunday Driver invite you to come and eat cake, play games and lose yourself quite completely.
We will be taking donations on the night towards buying instruments and music lessons for locally based disadvantaged children (Charity tbc) .
Winners of Fatea Magazine 2009 Award for Innovation
In The City Of Dreadful Night, the album out now
Sunday Driver, abstractly named after a gene commonly found in mice, are well known for their experimentation with new sounds. Their unique line up comprises a clarinet, tabla, sitar, concert harp, guitar, vocals, and a pair of dessert spoons.
The sounds of Sunday Driver’s debut album, In The City of Dreadful Night, range from the being darkly comic to mystical and hypnotic. Drawing on the band's diverse musical and cultural backgrounds, the album takes its inspiration from the Victorian backstreets of London and the chaos of Kipling's Calcutta - passing through the Antarctic and the courts of Henry VIII on the way. From the opening thrum of Gayatri Mantra, a Sanskrit prayer, to the haunting piano of closing track, Naked Bodies, the album mixes acoustic, Indian, classical, jazz and folk influences.
The album has received radio play from the likes of the BBC Asian Network, BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire and BBC 3 Counties.
Sunday Driver’s live shows are not to be missed, with highlights of 2009 including performances at the Cambridge Folk Festival, London’s world famous Café de Paris, Cambridge University’s 800th Anniversary Party, the Asylum (the UK’s first ever Steampunk festival) and a headline slot at the Inselsommer Festival in Germany. Gigs this year include Sunrise Festival, the Secret Garden Party and the first Cambridge Asian Mela (Cambridge Big Day Out).
2010 has seen the band find international success, most notably they are steadily gathering a following throughout the US, thanks to the suitably eclectic and bizarre steampunk movement, favourite fans they’ve collected this year include Author Robert Rankin and Oregon based Kill Rock Stars founder (& The Gossip manager) Portia Sabin. With a new album in the pipeline for 2011 things look in no danger of slowing down for the youngest old band in Cambridge.
"a true musical kaleidoscope - 10/13" Jim Ody - Roomthirteen.com
“An act to watch for the future" – Pathaan (BBC Asian Network)
‘‘The Gayatri Mantra is a little sample that whets the whistle, enticing you to want to see Sunday Driver live to experience the exquisiteness first hand…positively pulchritudinous and vital” – Audioscribbler
"Breathtakingly cool and stunningly compelling... In The City Of Dreadful Night is a fantastic album that's diverse and tantalising; beautifully conceived, stunningly executed and an absolute joy to behold" – Toxic Pete
