Could providing hypnobirthing courses on the NHS save the health service money and provide the answer to an easy birth?
That's what the Cambridge Maternity Services Liason Committee (MSLC) will be looking at this evening (Wednesday 5 October).
Statistics suggest that women who do the course are far less likely to need drugs or epidurals as they can use relaxation techniques to help manage their pain.
Cambridge based hypnobirthing teacher, Callie Copeman-Bryant of Birthsense will make a presentation to the committee:
"It's very well supported at the Rosie" she told Star Radio. "I've taught around 500 people, so there's lots of word of mouth referrals because women do this course and they have such amazing births and it's miles away from the traumatic experience that you usually hear about."
"For woman not doing hynobirthing, 6% of woman have no pain relief at all. With my company 55% of woman aren't having any pain relief whatsoever and just over 30% are having gas and air only."
The MSLC want to hear the views of local people. The open meeting takes place at the Field's Children's Centre, Galfrid Road, Cambridge at 7pm.
