Cambridgeshire County Councillors have voted in favour of asking the government for cash to build a new rail station in the north of Cambridge as soon as possible.
The new facility in Chesterton would be paid for out of the Transport Inovation Fund which may mean a congestion charge being introduced in the future. They plan to bid for the remainder of the half a billion pounds next year.
Part of their bid will be a condition that they have to introduce a congestion charge if traffic levels are still bad. A trigger point will be set if traffic levels reach that trigger the charge will be introduced. The earliest the charge can coem in is 2017.
The council say they expect to hear about the funding for Chesterton Rail station before the end of the year.
