The International Olympic Committee says it has "complete confidence" in London's ability to stage a safe and secure Olympic Games despite the current unrest.
A delegation from the IOC arrived in the capital to scenes of burning buildings and rioters on the streets.
With less than a year to go until London 2012, IOC members have arrived to assess preparations.
Representatives from almost 200 Olympic Committees around the world are also in London to discuss the state of play.
While police have been criticised for an apparent failure to contain the situation, the IOC refrained from casting doubt on security for the Games.
"Security is the top priority for the IOC," said a spokesperson, "but it is not our direct responsibility - that is something for the authorities in London in whom we have complete confidence."
Meanwhile, the London Organising Committee, LOCOG, said their position on security was unchanged.
A spokeswoman said: "A lot of detailed work has taken place regarding security plans for the Games and we will continue to review them together with the Met Police and the Home Office over the coming year."
While the relevant bodies are officially proclaiming their confidence, the riots could hardly have come at a worse time.
A series of test events are being held in London at the moment and security will be a major concern as they continue.
Elsewhere England's friendly against The Netherlands Wembley on Wednesday has been cancelled.
The FA said it took the decision following discussions with ministers, the Metropolitan Police and Brent Council.
Tonight's Carling Cup matches between West Ham and Aldershot and Charlton and Reading have also been scrapped over security concerns.
