WATERBEACH BARRACKS THROWS OPEN IT’S GATES A parachute jump by the Royal Engineers Parachute Display team and a Battle of Britain Flypast are just two of the highlights at the Army open day next weekend. 12 (Air Support) Engineer Group who are based at Waterbeach Barracks are inviting the people of Cambridge to join them at their Open Day on Saturday, 30th May between 11.30am and 4pm. Visitors to the barracks will have a unique opportunity to see an array of military hardware including a helicopter from 3 Army Air Corps, military engineering equipment and the personal kit used by soldiers on operations. Entertainment for the children will include fair type attractions, a bouncy castle and children’s events in the main arena. Visitors will also have the opportunity to speak with soldiers about the good work that they have done in Iraq and Afghanistan and sovereign bases that the Army operates from around the world. Entry is free and fun and adventure will be the order of the day for young and old alike. Entertainment will start with the Royal Engineer Parachute Display team landing in the main arena. This will be followed by a combat bridge building demonstration and tug-of-war prior to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flypast. Small teams of soldiers from the Barracks are still deployed in Afghanistan. A further 110 soldiers from 25 Engineer Regiment are in Kenya getting some practical hands on experience of their trades. The soldiers, including brick layers, carpenters and joiners, are working on a construction project to improve the training facilities at Laikipia Airfield having already built two new dormitories for a local school.
