Fourteen local charities have welcomed the news that they will be the beneficiaries of this year’s Sawston Fun Run on 15th May. In addition to the Rosie Maternity Hospital, the local Marie Cancer Care and MS branches there are seven Sawston based organisations that will benefit as well as youth groups in Shelford/Stapleford and Whittlesford/Duxford.

The organisers, the Rotary Club of Sawston District, aim to raise at least £17,000 to help the local charities and organisations. So, everyone is asked to put the date in their diaries, be ready to enter the run or walk and to get as many sponsors as possible as soon as they enter.

Rosie Maternity Campaign

One of the UK’s best performing maternity hospitals; the Rosie provides women and babies in the Cambridge area with first-class maternity, neonatal and gynaecological services in a safe, clean and friendly environment. After almost thirty years, demand for maternity care in Cambridge and the surrounding area has outgrown the capacity of the Rosie. So a new £30 million purpose-built, three-storey facility is planned; £7 million of which must be found from charitable sources.

Marie Curie Cancer Care provides nursing to terminally ill patients in their own homes or in their hospices, while offering support to their families.

Multiple Sclerosis is an acute disabling neurological disorder; its cause is unknown and there is no known cure. The Cambridge branch arranges special exercise classes that alleviate the pain and spasticity often associated with the condition and the Fun Run will pay for some of those classes.

  • Sawston Community Centre towards its refurbishment costs

  • Friday Night Club, Sawston for special activity sessions for those with learning disabilities

  • Sawston Toy Library for soft play equipment for pre-school children

  • Sawston Scouts for a mess tent

  • Sawston Guides for a patrol tent

  • Sawston Cinema Club  for a video camera for the young members

  • Shelford & Stapleford Youth Group for IT equipment for the youth group

  • Cambridge Joint Playschemes for an ‘Activity Day’ for young people with severe learning disabilities

  • Fledglings, of Wendens Ambo to support the charity that helps children with disabilities

  • Whittlesford & Duxford Scouts for equipment for the Beavers
